Split Pea Soup

Total Time: 2 hrs 5 mins Preparation Time: 5 mins Cook Time: 2 hrs

Ingredients

  • Servings: 6
  • 1 lb dried split peas
  • 11 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 1 large onion, chopped fine
  • 3 chicken bouillon cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon celery salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1 ham bone or 1 smoked ham hock

Recipe

  • 1 sort and rinse split peas.
  • 2 combine split peas, water,butter,onion,boullion,garlic,oregano,celery salt and pepper in large dutch oven. bring to a boil then turn down to low heat. simmer 1 hour uncovered.
  • 3 add ham bone and carrots. simmer about 1 1/2 hours or until thick, stirring occationally.
  • 4 remove ham bone and rinse off. cut meat off bone into small pieces and add back into soup.
  • 5 taste for salt add as desired.
